Blake Wilhelm, Northeast Alabama Community College to Explore how the mountains and rivers shaped the men and women of
Northeast Alabama.
From prehistoric times to the Great Depression and
through today in Where the River Meets the Mountains: Voices from
Appalachian Alabama. Participants will journey to three local historic sites and discover the stories of the people who defined life in Alabama during their respective eras. When visiting Russell Cave National Monument, participants will learn about the ancient cave‐dwelling inhabitants.
Pioneer and antebellum life in Jackson County will be studied at the Scottsboro‐ Jackson Heritage Center. At the Scottsboro Boys Museum and Cultural Center, participants will examine the facets of the Scottsboro Boys Trial, a history defining court case that inspired the novel To Kill A Mockingbird. The goal of this institute is for teachers to understand how story‐telling and music have helped preserve local history, as well as learn how to record and share their
